A new website usually looks better and ranks worse. Redesigns quietly break the things search engines rely on: URLs change without redirects, heading structure gets flattened for visual style, and internal links point to pages that no longer exist.
Before any redesign goes live, I run a fixed checklist: map every existing URL to its new destination with 301 redirects, preserve heading hierarchy even when the visual design changes, re-check internal linking, and resubmit the sitemap to Search Console the day it launches.
Most ranking drops after a redesign are avoidable. They happen because speed was prioritized over this checklist, not because the new design was bad.
